DS lite is lighter and smaller compared to the DS
packs a 1000mAh battery compared to the 850mAh of the DS
They moved a few keys around to make them more accessible

For more info :

If your choosing between the original DS and the DS Lite I would definitely go with the DS Lite.

The price isn't too much different but it's worth it.
The DS Lite is all around thinner and lighter, but more importantly it has a bigger and brighter screen (and you can adjust the brightness).

Also, if your daughter ever wanted to buy extra accessories for her new system such as cases or system skins, there is a LOT to choose from for DS Lite and they haven't discontinued these at all.

Aside from that, they don't even make the DS original so you'd probably have to settle for a used one, where with the DS Lite you can have your choice between new or used.
